Cataractagenitus

cataractagenitus

Definition

A cloud formed as a result of spray from a waterfall or from the turbulent water at the base of one. The spray adds moisture and the turbulence lifts it, producing cloud that is localised to the immediate vicinity of the falls.

Field note

Cataractagenitus is a small-scale example of the same physics that makes lake-effect snow and sea fog: a water surface supplies moisture, and a mechanism supplies the lift. It is a good demonstration cloud.
