Translucidus

translucidus

Definition

A cloud variety describing a layer thin enough that the position of the sun or moon is clearly visible through it. It applies to altocumulus, altostratus, stratocumulus and stratus.

Field note

Translucidus is a thinning or recently formed layer. For altostratus it marks the point before the sun's disc disappears, which is the rain countdown threshold for a warm front.
